Timetable development and performance modelling can be used to assess the benefits of different options (such as journey time, capacity or performance) in order to help option selection, refine options under development or input into a business case.​

This helps set the industry strategy and feeds into the industry regulatory process (such as Periodic Review and the Long Term Planning Process).

Timetable Development and Planning

From small-scale timetable changes such as those associated with new stations and infrastructure change to the introduction of significant change accompanying the implementation of national-level programmes, we can offer timetable development and planning using a variety of different tools and software packages.

We are experienced both at a very detailed level to high-level "proof of concept" timetables up to 30 years (or more!) in the future.  This can be using RailSys or Bellvedi ATTUne.

Performance Modelling

Performance modelling using a tool such as RailSys® can help build a better timetable and analyse the benefits associated with an infrastructure or timetable change.

This can help answer questions such as whether infrastructure schemes or timetable changes have a positive or negative impact on performance, and evaluate different options to help select the most beneficial.

RailSys® simulates the operation of a timetable on a "normal" day using real-world delay data. Scenario modelling can also be used to look at the impact of specific scenarios (e.g. line blockages, failures etc.) on the operation of the network.

Capacity Analysis - RailSys® simulation and modelling

RailSys® is a highly detailed simulation and modelling package produced by RMCon.  We have a great deal of experience using RailSys® for a wide range of different applications. RailSys® simulates the movement of trains at a signal-berth level and the inbuilt tools can be used for a range of different purposes, including:

  • Timetable development. Simulation of a timetable can help build a better timetable by detecting and eliminating conflicts
  • Calculation of Timetable Planning Rules for an infrastructure or rolling stock change
  • Calculation of Sectional Running Times (SRTs) to help build a case for line speed improvements, new rolling stock etc.
  • Performance Modelling
  • Capacity Analysis. Analyse the capacity of the network to help define a future strategy or look at individual enhancements to realise benefits
